Van Bynen kicks off his 2010 re-election campaign
Dear friends:
I am pleased to announce that I will be seeking re-election as Mayor of Newmarket in the municipal elections to be held on October 25, 2010.
I have been proud to serve as your Mayor for the past three years and as I begin my cam-
paign for re-election, I want to share with you some of the core beliefs on which my candidacy is based.
- You deserve to receive fair value for your municipal tax dollar.
- You deserve to be able to raise your children in a safe, healthy community.
- You deserve a municipal council that not only responds to the changing nature of our town, but leads this transformation.
- You deserve to live in a community that is open and responsive to the needs of its less fortunate.
- You deserve a municipal council that recognizes the need for more businesses and thus more jobs in the community.
I am proud of what Newmarket Council has accomplished during my first term as your Mayor. Here are some examples:
- We implemented a five-year plan to steadily reduce the increases in the rate of taxation without affecting service levels or our ability to maintain or replace capital assets. For example, when residents of the Lewis Dr. area were plagued by flooding basements during the Western Creek flood, we responded by improving vital infrastructure in the area with a $3.9 million capital investment without raising taxes.
- Southlake Regional Health Centre is growing into one of Ontario’s major health care facilities and one of Newmarket’s major employers. Our Town Council is working in partnership with the hospital, the Chamber of Commerce and key community leaders to help bring a medical university and health sciences research facility to Newmarket.
- We have entered other partnerships to build a better community. With the hospital and public library, we are partnering on a shared digital infrastructure, and have obtained federal grants for it. The Town and the Chamber operate Smart Commute Central York which works to get people out of cars and into healthier modes of travel, reduce traffic congestion, and reduce pollution.
- Our Town Council recognized the pressing need for a Women’s Shelter and we have worked hard together with our community support team and the Region of York to start making it a reality.
- Our very first economic development plan was created by a partnership of community and business leaders working through the Newmarket Economic Development Advisory Committee (NEDAC) to attract new businesses and jobs. NEDAC is a key player in our drive to keep the downtown heritage district as a viable and attractive business district.
These are just a few of our accomplishments and I will be talking about many more over the course of the campaign. Our campaign has just begun and I am excited about the year ahead.
Sincerely,
Tony Van Bynen
