Town of Newmarket

Newmarket has long been the centre for York Region, being the home of the administrative headquarters for the Regional Municipality of York as well as York Regional Police, the Provincial Courts and Southlake Regional Health Centre.  It is a also a major retail centre with the Upper Canada Mall alone boasting almost a million square feet of retail space. The number of jobs in Newmarket increased at an average annual rate of 2.3% since 1998. By 2008, there were an estimated 2,400 businesses employing 40,200 people in the area.

The Town of Newmarket’s geographic boundaries currently contain only 38 square kilometers of land and it is one of the top three most densely populated communities in Ontario with a population of over 80,000 and is expected to grow to almost 100,000 by the year 2031.

We enjoy hectares of woodlands, parks and kilometers of walking trails, a theatre that can accommodate 400 people, in addition to the Old Town Hall and 3 recreation complexes which contain in total 3 pools, 7 ice rinks (including 1 Olympic sized rink).

In 2005 the Province of Ontario designated Newmarket as one of York Region’s four Urban Growth Centres, setting the stage for a major transformation opportunity that is just beginning to unfold, following the approval of our new Official Plan in 2008 and the introduction of Viva Rapid Transitway expansion along Yonge Street and across Davis Drive.
