On this day, 32 years ago, Ukraine declared its independence as a nation and Canada was the first Western country to recognize this independence. Today, Ukrainians are fighting for freedom in the face of Russia’s illegal and unjustifiable invasion of their country.
Despite this, we’ve seen Ukrainians continue to show great courage and bravery as they continue to defend their homeland and fight for our shared values of freedom and democracy.
Today, we join Ukrainian communities throughout Canada and around the world as we celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day and highlight the important contributions of Ukrainians to our nation. Newmarket-Aurora is home to over 3,000 Canadians of Ukrainian descent who continue to enrich our culture with their heritage, language, and traditions.
Today and every day, we stand with our Ukrainian allies against Russia’s brutality. I wish Ukrainians communities in Canada and across the world a happy Independence Day.
Slava Ukraini!
