Participating in the Coldest Night of the Year Walk

For several years, my wife, Roxanne, and I have volunteered with Inn From the Cold and have joined their Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) Walk in Newmarket since it has started.

Every year, members of the community join Inn From the Cold and pledge to walk 2 kilometres or 5 kilometres in February to raise money for these charities. Team Van Bynen surpassed our goal and raised $2,345 for the Walk.

I was pleased to see so many familiar and new faces joining us this past Saturday to participate in the CNOY Walk. I was also pleased to see Inn From the Cold surpassing their goal of $90,000 before the event, reaching a total of $172,416 by the end of Saturday.

Inn From the Cold is a crucial organization in York Region that meets the needs of people who are experiencing or are at risk of experiencing homelessness. I am proud to have volunteered with their organization and look forward to their future work to support those experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness.

Last November, our government provided Inn From the Cold with over $7.4 million through the Rapid Housing Initiative. This funding will be used to help build a 3-story building with 44 beds for emergency and transitional housing at 17046 Yonge Street in Newmarket. This space would also include administrative spaces to provide full-time support services, as well as shared programming and amenity space for residents.

To Inn From the Cold, the volunteers, the walkers, sponsors, and anybody who donated, thank you. I’m looking forward to next year’s walk!
