York Region Liberal Caucus Statement on York Region Catholic District School Board Decision

This week we will observe the start of Pride Season, a time to reaffirm our support for 2SLGBTQI+ members and speak up against discrimination. It is a time to remember the importance of providing safer spaces for sexually and gender diverse people in Canada, where they can be their most true, authentic selves.

It is disappointing to see the York Region Catholic School Board’s decision to not fly the Pride flag during such a significant time of year. All students deserve to feel respected, accepted, and safe in their schools regardless of how they identify.

With this decision, we are reminded that we still have work to do as we continue to build a more inclusive society. We’re taking action to ensure that all Canadians feel respected and safe at work, school, home, and other spaces.

In August, our government launched the 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan: An Ongoing Commitment to Action. This plan aims to advance equality and the rights of 2SLGBTQI+ people in Canada. The path forward is forged in collaboration between the Government of Canada, 2SLGBTQI+ communities, organizations, and individuals. The decision by the Board to not raise the Pride flag this year goes against our efforts to make Canada an inclusive place for everyone.

It doesn’t matter who you love or how you identify, above all else human rights, dignity and the promotion of inclusivity is vital to the success of our community and our youth. We are disappointed in this decision by the Board and reaffirm our support for the 2SLGBTQI+ youth and community.

In solidarity,
