With the holidays upon us, ‘Tis the season for making resolutions and setting goals for the New Year ahead. This is very important for Newmarket Council as we embark on a new term that comes with many opportunities and some challenges. Like many of you, we are looking forward to a new beginning and early in the New Year we will determine Council’s strategic priorities. This will act as a roadmap to guide our decision making over the next four years. This is a task that we do not take lightly as we strive to make our community even better and ensure that we continue to be one of the best places to live in Canada.

What we have heard through our recent community survey is that 95 per cent of residents are satisfied with Newmarket as a place to live and 84 per cent of residents feel they are receiving value for their tax dollars. We recognize this is a significant accomplishment and a joint effort between Council, staff and Newmarket residents. We are now entering the 2015 budget process and Council has set a target for staff so that we continue to deliver exceptional services while keeping taxes in line with inflation.

What we have also heard is that there is an opportunity to further engage our citizens in municipal processes and we can do better in the areas of traffic control, snow plowing for sidewalks and parking enforcement. We highly value this feedback and it will help us shape our goals and priorities in the coming years.

As we move forward, we will continue to look for new and innovative ways to reach out and engage our community. You can keep up to date on the latest Town news by following us on Twitter and signing up for our e-newsletters (Newmarket Now and the Downtown Dish).

Here are a few ways you can get involved, provide feedback and help to shape the future of Newmarket:

  • Recreation Playbook – By filling out an online survey on recreation programs in Newmarket it will help to identify what areas we are doing well in and where we can improve
  • 2015 Budget – In January, participate in the online budget tool to provide your two cents on how you would like to see your tax dollars invested.
  • Attend a Council meeting – Share your views by making a deputation to Council. (Contact the Town of Newmarket at 905-895-5193)

As we all look forward to a New Year and a new chapter, please remember to take time to spend with loved ones and truly enjoy the spirit of the festive season. The Town offers many wonderful winter events to enjoy with family and friends. Please visit the Town’s website for more event details.

On behalf of Newmarket Council, wishing you and your family a very happy, healthy holiday season and all the best in 2015.

Sincerely,

Tony Van Bynen, Mayor of Newmarket
