Since my first election as your councillor in 2000, I have seen many significant changes in our community as our vision of the “Renewal of Newmarket” has built upon our rich history to create a solid foundation for our future. A future that holds out opportunities for our children, grandchildren and the generations that will follow them.

As I look back on these years, as your Mayor I am proud of how we have worked together as a community to achieve success in award winning projects like building our Magna Centre; our Operations Centre; our Riverwalk Commons; Belinda’s Place; rebuilding the Old Town Hall, the Revitalization of Main Street and – more importantly – strengthening our sense of community. We can all be proud of consistently being recognized over many years by an independent survey as one of the best places in Canada to live.

I am proud of our many partnerships with our hospital for the business incubator and research centre in “Create-IT-Now”; and the new Margaret Bahen Hospice together with the relocation of their Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre to our Magna Centre.

I am proud of our collaboration with the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce in setting up “Smart Commute Central York” and our “Smart City Council”; our makerspace created at “NewmakeIT”, as well as our community participation in the Newmarket Economic Development Advisory Committee.

In spite of a number of challenges over these years, Newmarket Council has consistently maintained its focus on making Newmarket even better. We have seen and supported Davis Drive’s transformation into a new Bus Transit Rapidway with VivaNext, extending southbound also to include Yonge Street, and the announcement of a new GO Transit station on Mulock Drive. We have advocated for and supported the ongoing construction of the new Regional Annex on Yonge Street next to the Regional Administration Centre.

Equally as important is the professional support and commitment we enjoy with our staff under the exceptional leadership of our CAO, Bob Shelton, and his team of Commissioners and Directors. They have created a strong positive work environment built on trust, creativity, collaboration and innovation. In my 48 years of experience in business and community organizations, I have never seen such a dedicated, committed and professional team of people who genuinely care about our community as I have seen here in the Town of Newmarket.

Through five elections the residents of Newmarket have placed their confidence in me and that is something I can never forget. I have been the fortunate steward of a great community. As we look toward the next term of Council, I have decided not to seek re-election as your Mayor. I am doing so with the full confidence that we have a dedicated team committed to making our community even better.  As a private citizen, and together with my always supportive family, I hope to continue to play a role in the exciting future that lies ahead for our town.
