We know that families are struggling with the cost of living, but the Canada Wide Early Learning and Childcare system is helping them cope. In my riding of Newmarket-Newmarket over 3,200 children are benefitting from this program and I know it is having a huge positive impact on their families.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the “Three for the Show” concert series has hosted some of the most celebrated and gifted classical and jazz music talent on the scene today. The concert and its 25 years of musical performances serve as a reminder of the essential cultural importance and historical significance of music in building whole communities. My gratitude goes out to the gifted performers and to VPAN for providing a platform to the brightest and most gifted in the performance arts industry today and the most promising young musicians of tomorrow. I thank VPAN and the Three for the Show committee of Erika Kerwin, Margaret Barkman, Judy Craig and Marcia Sinclair for their beautiful concert series.
Recognizing Visual & Performing Arts Newmarket - June 20th, 2023
May 18th marks Vyshyvanka Day. Vyshyvanka is the Ukrainian word for a traditionally styled embroidered shirt or dress in Ukraine’s national costumes. The shirt represents a symbol of unity of Ukrainian sovereignty, history, and culture. Since 2006, Ukrainians around the world have celebrated Ukraine’s rich culture and history by proudly wearing Vyshyvankas annually on the third Thursday of May. In the early 20th century, Vyshyvanka became an important symbol of national identity for Ukrainians seeking independence from Russia. During the Soviet era, however, the wearing of traditional clothing was discouraged, and many aspects of Ukrainian culture were suppressed. Following Ukraine's independence in 1991, there was a renewed interest in traditional culture, including the wearing of Vyshyvanka. In 2006, a group of Ukrainian students launched the first Vyshyvanka Day, encouraging people across the country to wear their embroidered clothing to celebrate their cultural heritage. Since then, Vyshyvanka Day has grown in popularity, with people in Ukraine and around the world taking part in the celebration. The holiday has become an important symbol of Ukrainian pride and identity. As Russia maintains its illegal invasion of Ukraine since February 2022, it is more important than ever to stand in solidarity with Ukraine. Let’s use Vyshyvanka Day as an opportunity to show our solidarity with the Ukrainian people and pay tribute to their remarkable resistance. On February 6, 2023, Newmarket lost a true community builder. Dave Kerwin was a valuable member of our community, serving on the Newmarket Council for 39 years. Dave Kerwin's legacy will continue to live on throughout the history of Newmarket.
Celebrating the life of Dave Kerwin - May 15th, 2023
Budget 2023 is entitled “A Made-in-Canada Plan: Strong Middle Class, Affordable Economy, Healthy Future”. However, like many things done in Canada, this is a plan that has an impact extending far beyond our borders, and that is because, in order for us to have a healthy future, we must have a healthy world, a world based on the rule of law where no people or nation can be threatened, subjugated or destroyed by illegal acts of aggression. That is why, since Russia's illegal, full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Canada has supported the people of Ukraine as they fight for their sovereignty and democracy, and for democracy around the world. Canada will stand with them for as long as it takes. With more than $8 billion in total aid, Canada has provided critical financial assistance to the Ukraine government and has provided significant military and humanitarian support. In particular, Canada has sanctioned over 1,800 individuals and entities since February 2022. We have played a key role in the development of price caps on Russian oil and petroleum products to deprive the Kremlin of revenues to fund its illegal war. In fact, on March 2, 2022, Canada became the first country to revoke Russian and Belarusian eligibility for most favoured nation status, placing Russia and Belarus in the same category as North Korea, and in turn applying the 35% general tariff to virtually all Russian and Belarusian imports. Similar measures were subsequently implemented by the United States, the United Kingdom and other major trading partners. Canada is playing a leading role in efforts to cut Russia off from the global economy and to hold Putin and his cronies accountable for their illegal war on Ukraine. With budget 2023, we are taking this measure one step further by proposing to amend the Customs Tariff to indefinitely extend the withdrawal of most favoured nation preferred tariff treatment for Russian and Belarusian imports. Bill C-47 would make this change a reality, and it needs our support as parliamentarians.

I rise today, proud to represent my community of Newmarket—Aurora and, most important, the broader community of York Region. Home to nine municipalities and over 1.2 million residents, York Region is one of the largest municipalities in Canada. As a former mayor of Newmarket, I know how important it is for all levels of government to work collaboratively and in partnership with one another. When we work together effectively, we can produce something more significant than any one of us could accomplish on our own. I want to thank Wayne Emmerson, the chair of the Regional Municipality of York, his staff and their mayors for coming to Ottawa to share their priorities, their issues, their concerns and the opportunities with our government. Let us continue to work together and accomplish the best for our communities.
