Clean Air Day 2024

On the first Wednesday in June, since 1999, Canada recognizes Clean Air Day to remind us of the importance of clean air for good health and a safe environment. While Canadians benefit from relatively good air quality, air pollution continues to have an impact on our environment and health, contributing both to health issues and premature deaths. In fact, air pollution is the leading environmental risk to health in Canada and contributes to 17,400 deaths annually.

Air pollution knows no boundaries – it harms wildlife, vegetation, and ecosystems. Last year, we saw one of the most destructive wildfire seasons ever recorded, which caused devastating effects across Canada and even in the United States.

On Clean Air Day, Canadians are encouraged to learn what they can do to minimize their carbon footprint and do their part to protect the air we breathe all year round. You can join a local Clean Air Day event, learn more about protecting your indoor air, invest in a portable air purifier, and take other actions such as using public transit more often. Learn more about what you can do here.

Our government is committed to protecting the air quality. We’ve implemented several frameworks and measures to ensure Canada does its part in reducing emissions. All of us can take action to reduce our own carbon footprint to collectively contribute to cleaner air and reduce the impacts of climate change for everyone. Happy Clean Air Day!
