Supporting projects designed by seniors for seniors

Seniors have made and continue to make significant and valuable contributions to their families, communities, and workplaces. Our government remains committed to supporting local organizations that empower seniors, promote engagement within their communities, and contribute to their health and well-being.

Through the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP), our government provides federal grants and contributions to projects that make a difference in the lives of seniors and in their communities. The 2024-25 call-for-proposals are now open, and organizations who meet the eligibility criteria are eligible to receive up to $25,000 in grant funding for one year.

Projects must meet all the following criteria:

  • be no longer than 52 weeks
  • request no more than $25,000
  • meet at least one program objective
  • seniors will lead or play a vital role in its planning and/or delivery
  • seek to benefit seniors and communities
  • demonstrate cost effectiveness

Projects submitted must also meet at least one of the following program objectives:

  • promoting volunteerism among seniors and other generations;
  • engaging seniors in the community through the mentoring of others;
  • expanding awareness of elder abuse, including financial abuse;
  • supporting the social participation and inclusion of seniors; and,
  • providing capital assistance for new and existing community projects and/or programs for seniors.

In the last call-for-proposals, Newmarket-Aurora received $214,567 through the NHSP to support nine organizations. This investment will help these organizations build safer, more inclusive, and healthier communities for seniors in our community. I look forward to seeing the positive work and contributions that these organizations will make.

Canadians deserve to age with dignity. That comes to choice, to affordability, to inclusion, and to community. The NHSP creates those opportunities for seniors to be more connected, supported, and active members of the community. If you have a project or are planning a project that meets the eligibility requirements, I encourage your organization to apply for funding before the deadline on September 12, 2024
