Ramadan Mubarak!

MP Van Bynen at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Interfaith Symposium in 2023

Today marks the start of the most sacred month of Islam — Ramadan. This year, Muslims across Canada will celebrate Ramadan from today until Tuesday, April 9th, depending on the new moon sighting. The conclusion of Ramadan is known as Eid al-Fitr, and is one of the major religious holidays in the Islamic calendar.

Muslim communities commemorate this holy month by fasting from sunrise to sunset, joining in prayers, and reflecting on the core values of Islam. They gather with friends and family to break the fast together through an evening meal known as iftar.

Ramadan embodies the spirit of selflessness, compassion, and generosity, emphasizing acts of charity and kindness towards others. It is a time to encourage individuals to deepen one’s faith through self-reflection.

During this period, we must also recognize the action we must take to stand up against the islamophobia and discrimination that Muslims across the nation face every day. Hate is never okay and is not what Canada stands for. Let’s stay committed to educating ourselves and fostering inclusive environments in schools, workplaces, and communities.

I encourage everyone to take time to learn more about the traditions and celebrations of Muslim communities during this sacred month.

Ramadan Mubarak!
